Black young finch bill. Wilmer demonstrating one method of holding a finch. Young black face (male) zebra finch just becoming independent. Note the black bill tip. As the young colored zebra finch ages the bill color becomes yellow (later orange--to red in the fully adult male) progressively toward the tip. The young zebra finch is not independent of the parents until the yellow/orange bill is at least 50% (or more) of the bill color.
