COMMENTS: The ipê amarelo and ipê roxo are well loved trees in Brazil with yellow and purple/pink blossoms profusely blooming before the leaves return. The allamanda is not native. The pequí is a nice tree of the cerrado (savannah). Its fruit is eaten by many Brazilians, but with care. It has spines if you eat too far in. It does make the best wine I've found (from Brazilian fruits). The mogno (mahogony) makes a reddish hard wood used for furniture. Our bed was made from mogno. It has a strange seed, winged and light weight about 5 inches long and very fragile!. The first one I saw I thought was a piece of plastic from a car! Triplaris brasiliana or ant tree has a 3-winged seed nearly 1 inch long. The seed propellers down in an interesting manner. Erythrina speciosa has a brilliant red finger sized blossom spray. The birosca (also guaraparavú) is one of my favorite trees with a beautiful double compound leaf canopy against the sky. The fruit is winged and about 5 inches long. The seed is flat, oblong, and about 1 inch long. The seed can be used as a "worry stone" and will polish up nicely in the pocket. The white Bauhinia seeds are a source of a lectin that shows polymorphism for the domestic dog. Purple flowered Bauhinia seeds do not do so. Clitoria fairchildiana has a seed mimicing that of the Bauhinia which resembles a penny! Olha de cabra has a red seed with a large jet black patch. It can be used as the eyes of a doll. It traditionally is good luck to carry such a seed in ones pocket. *native fruits much desired by the Bandeirantes and populations in the countryside: bacupari-- yellow-orange fruit about hen's egg size. ciriguela-- pulp is tender, sweet and juicy; fruit is about ½ inch sized pitomba- "better tasting than cherries"; meaty white sweet sour pulp; fruit about 3 cm in diameter umbu-- like a small yellow plum with succulent sweet-sour pulp, root tubers hold a half pint of perfectly drinkable water. **Jatobá also is used medicinally and makes a good wine. ***Guaranáis the source of a national drink about equal to Coca Cola! I like it very much! ****Bixa Orellana--as given in NATIVE PEOPLES Spring 1999 May*June*July p. 12 XAK' : The Savory Secret of Mayan Cooking ..."most widely used ...the red seasoning know as Chak Xak' in Maya or recado colorado in Spanish... For the ancient Maya, annatto (achiote) were an important ceremonial offering to the gods. ...The tiny brick-red seeds ...were associated with rain and ...used in agricultural rites to season foods offered to the gods....painted their bodies, robes, and ceremonial ceramics with achiote....seeds used as a form of currency....
